As soon as I saw Marie Mas' work on Couture's Instagram page, I fell in love. Innovative designs that transform and move have been the most inspiring to me recently and Marie's work combines all of those things in the most beautiful way. She uses pastel colored stones set in rose gold to create jewelry that is romantic and soft as well as a bit edgy. I am so very excited to see these pieces in person at Couture in a few weeks!
At the beginning I studied textile design but the personal projects I worked on always came out to be jewels. Then I started studying accessory design and it also took the shape of jewelry; jewelry-bags or jewelry-shoes - Jewelry actually came to me very naturally.
In my process, I firstly think of new concepts, new ideas, new techniques. Then I sketch and make mock-ups, sometimes only in paper, to see the shapes and then draw again.
For me everything is inspiring, it can be from a dive, or from a building's detail, or a flower, or an exhibition, anything from everyday life. More generally, I would say that it comes from 2 main things : nature and architecture. The only thing that I hate is looking at jewels to create jewels - in my opinion you will never make something new that way.
Favorite design: That's an hard question. Let's say the one I would wear the most would be the dancing open ring, which I wear all the time! Cause it is moving with me, so it's like it's alive and I like the idea that the jewelry is more than an object, that it have some kind of soul.
Daily jewels: There are 4 rings that I love and often wear, one is the dancing open ring and the others are family rings. One comes from my mom, one from my grandmother and one from my other grandmother. I believe in the power of jewelry and when I wear them I feel like they are with me. I also daily wear the swiveling stud earrings, and the dancing earrings when I go out.
Favorite artists and designers: My favorite artist is definitely Theo Jansen, he is making alive sculptures, he is an artist and a engineer in the same time. I admire him SO MUCH. My dream is to see his strand beast on the beach! I also really love the work of the painter Lucian Freud, his paintings are so real and have such a soul and a particular touch in the same time. His work is really amazing. My favorite designer is Nendo, I love the way he brings poetry in design.
Other than jewelry: I LOVE to dive, when I can (Paris is not the best place to dive), the underwater world is absolutely magic and also very inspiring! I also love to draw people, to make portraits.
