I am very excited to share that Andrea Gutierrez will be exhibiting at JA New York. She is an incredible designer with a very cool aesthetic. Not only does Andrea create incredible work out of metal, she also has an entire collection of intricately beaded pieces. I, of course, am drawn to the edgy use of gold and silver. Get to know a bit about Andrea and see some of my favorite designs below. Also, do not miss meeting her and seeing her work at JA New York in a couple of weeks!
I have always loved, loved, loved antique jewelry and used to collect, and finally after multiple creative careers that have each given birth to the next, it was time for jewelry - I began working with embroidering and weaving metals six years ago, and gradually worked my way up to casting, stones and pearls in the last four years.
Usually, I start with a sketch and then I work with my wonderful wax sculptress, and together we both carve, mold and create the waxes - she is really the one with the talent for sculpture, I just add texture or a push a line a certain way to get the feel I am looking for. I have just started wanting to work with larger stones, and it seems that colour is what calls to me in that world. I love pearls, they can seduce from across a room. Laying out and playing with South Seas and Tahitians is one of my most favorite things to do, but, in the end, it is the metal that dictates everything else - shape, texture and line.
Everything I see and experience, textures, colours, shapes, history, art, light, shadows.
