The bright yellow gold paired with diamonds, opals and moonstones in Misa's designs remind me of the most beautiful beach. Jewelry for me is often an escape from reality. Perhaps that is an odd thing to say, but everything in the news is heartbreaking and daily life is sometimes difficult - everyone has an outlet, mine is sparkly. Misa's designs are both rough, refined and so dreamy. I am in love.
I took metalsmith classes offered at my high school in Hawaii when I was 15. My school provided such a creative environment for their students with incredible jewelry classes and glass blowing classes. I was so lucky to learn how to solder, use various jewelry tools and get experience with different types of metals at such a young age. That skill set I gained from my teen years has stayed with me throughout my jewelry career.
My design process is an organic one just like my jewelry, and I have no set routine or formula. I typically sketch often before I start carving my designs in wax, but often I'm so inspired by the beauty of gemstones that I just dive in and start sculpting my idea. Not having a set routine allows me to approach the design process differently for each piece and keeps the design process always so exciting.
Mother Earth. My childhood in Hawaii and Guam and my love for my nature have been a huge influence in my jewelry designs. Natural elements have always fascinated me on my travels, hikes, and beach days. Even at a very young age, I studied the patterns of tree roots and tropical coral in my backyard.
Favorite design: The Branch Diamond Ring is one of my favorites because it's what inspired me to transition from my vermeil and sterling silver line to all fine jewelry. Plus, it's the first piece I created for myself for my wedding day.
Favorite designer: I feel like Isabel Marant somehow got into my brain and started creating apparel that I thought up in my dreams. I wouldn't mind one bit if she decides to replace everything in my closet that is not already Isabel Marant with more Isabel Marant.
Currently listening to: Right now, everything Prince. He left such a big imprint in this world with his unique individuality and I'm sure he's inspired many designers like me to keep creating and contributing unique pieces of art. Listening to Prince reminds me that being different is wonderful.
