Last week I rushed into a cafe in the West Village to meet the lovely Elisa Solomon. I was running late, but she was not only patiently waiting but also excited to show me her designs. I had seen her work in photos, but never in person. Elisa is enthusiastic about her designs, the jewelry industry and puppies - all things I also love. She is like an up-beat Beatles song from the 60s, as is her work. I am hooked.
"Prior to college, I loved beading and braiding jewelry. I attended University of Michigan's School of Art and Design and my first class was "Jewelry and Metalsmithing." Working with the torch at school and learning about how to create with metal with very special. I fell in love with the classes. I worked primarily in 14 karat gold and loved how clean, beautiful quality of gold during the creation process!"
"After college, I started to carve with wax. Carving quickly became the most important part of my process. All the symbols, rings, and shapes that I wanted to articulate in my jewelry came through this way. I don't find I have much time to sketch and frankly I just love going for it with my carving tools. The design is very clear in my mind always, including the stones that will be set and every other detail."
"My jewelry is primarily inspired by the 60s. The world is a scary place now in many ways. The values don't always seem right. I constantly find myself connecting to the groovy vibe of the 60s. The belief in peace, love, and happiness. I loved the fashions, too. My jewelry has a bohemian, handmade feel."
"My favorite designs are my rings. I've loved trying on stacks of rings since I was a little girl playing with my mom's jewelry. The tie dye band is one of my favorite because I love the color! It's also great because it includes so many gemstones including garnet, citrine, sapphire, peridot, tsavorite, amethyst, and rhodolite."
When Elisa isn't designing, she is hanging with her German Shepherd, Bear. "He's always by my side and during my free time I'm normally walking him or playing with him in my backyard. My parents have a new German Shepherd puppy, Shiloh, and we hang out together all the time! I also love cooking! My family jokes that my food is also like art!"
Her favorite artist is Marc Chagall. "I love his use of color and the mystical feel to his paintings."
Not surprisingly Elisa's favorite band is The Beatles. She loves John Lennon's solo music too. One of her favorite songs is his rendition of "Stand By Me."
