Justin Brown, who I met through one of my very favorite jewelry stores, Quadrum Gallery, launched his jewelry line in 2015. I was immediately interested in his designs - they are unique and feature some of my favorite stones. Justin started his line because of his obsession with all things pavé. He previously worked for a craft jewelry artist who liked using non-traditional materials and after having that experience, Justin realized his passion leaned more towards the couture jewelry world. To make his dream happen, he chained himself to his bench in his spare time and got to work! Get to know more about Justin and his new line below.
"For the past two years I have had the great pleasure of working at Quadrum Gallery, photographing and selling beautiful gems, and am surrounded by the work of some of the world’s most talented jewelry designers and artists. This experience has influenced my own work greatly and has inspired me to better my designs. I admire Todd Pownell for his unique stone setting, Gabriella Kiss for her elegant designs, Todd Reed for his rise from the craft world to the height of the couture world, and Adel Chefridi for his ability to make pavé an artistic accent. Beyond my admiration for my contemporaries, I find myself constantly looking to the past for inspiration. I have a soft spot for vintage art deco necklaces; the technical precision required to create their joints and settings is awe-inspiring."
What we can expect from the line.
"I am moving full steam ahead at expanding my collection in both color and design. I enjoy finding positive and negative space in my work and plan to continue my noncontiguous pavé halos. In addition, I plan to start incorporating elements of 18k gold into my work; I am addicted to the combination of oxidized silver and 18k gold."
Justin's favorite design.
"Do parents have a favorite child over others? Yes… and unfortunately I do as well. I am still madly in love with the engagement ring I made for my wife. I was fresh out of school and had minimal equipment, just the flame of a crème brulee torch and the crudeness of a Dremel rotary tool. Oh the things we do for love."
"My favorite piece from my current line world be the pair of rutilated quartz dangle earrings. I love their movement and sparkle. But I truly love every piece I make. In particular I really enjoy when a piece is fresh out of the pickle pot, so bright and clean, just a piece in its infancy on the way to becoming a true work of art."
