This book was highly recommended by my cousin, Cristina. She warned me that this would be a tough read and it was. The novel took me a month to get through because it was deeply heartbreaking and I had to take breaks. The story is about a young girl who works in restaurants. It shares the dark sub-culture that is the service industry and how the main character, Marie, gets sucked in. She is amazing at her restaurant job but a complete failure at being a mother. It’s hard to follow her as she excels in waiting tables, but can’t figure out how to take care of her daughter. Through the novel Marie becomes more and more desensitized. She is here to serve you, and that is all. The writing is beautiful and truthful and reading this I got lost along side Marie. This character I had trouble relating to, but ended up caring deeply for - I wanted to save her, but couldn’t - no one could.
